The Blue Monkeys of Thera
can be found in room B 6 of the Beta sector of the excavation site Akrotiri. Since there were no monkeys living on the Aegean Islands at that time, the artist was inspired by either imported monkeys or he saw the primates with his own eyes in nearby Egypt.
The flourishing Cycladic culture under strong Minoan influence was devastated by a massive volcanic eruption in 1,620-1,600 BC. A catastrophe for the inhabitants of Thera, a blessing for posterity.
Under pumice and ash layers, some of which were 60 m high, outstanding cultural assets remained preserved, similar to Pompeij, Herculaneum and Stabiae.
