Description

The torch relay

was a competition discipline in its own right, i.e. not part of the Olympic Games. The tradition of torch runs was only established with the introduction of the Olympic Games of modern times.

The ancient Greek torch relay was usually held as a relay of eight runners in a nightly competition, whereby the torch was passed on like a baton and was not allowed to go out.

Relief exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
